Investment firm Hermes has issued a £65m shareholders' warning over the impact of environmental campaigners on palm oil companies.
The warning is the latest in a series of issues to investors over sustainability of their investments.
Palm oil makes up about 50% of all vegetable oil and is used in food, cosmetics and biofuel.
But environmental campaigners have been targeting palm oil companies and were instrumental in getting supply chains questioned.
There are five environmental campaigns targeting various suppliers of palm oil, and Hermes says as a result of their actions, hundreds of thousands of investors have had their money withdrawn from those companies.
A spokesman for Hermes said they were "extremely concerned" about the impact of the campaigns on investors and the company's reputation.
"[They have] undermined confidence in the palm oil sector," he said. "This is a concern that we are not prepared to accept.
"We will continue to invest in companies that operate sustainably and those that meet our stringent requirements for sustainability."
The warning was only made public this week, after years of investigation by Hermes.
In an advert published by the Financial Times, the company's chief executive, Jonathan Mathew, and chief investment officer, Rodney Manderson, say that palm oil has suffered from "an unsettling time".
"Many are conscious of its social and environmental impacts," they say. "And recent examples of campaigns undermining confidence in the sector have affected retail investors."

The warning follows a report by the Sustainable Investment Group (SIG) in which it said the market for palm oil was "increasingly troubled".
It said that many of the companies supplying palm oil to the food and drinks industry were losing value and companies like Unilever were also having to spend a lot of money on campaigning.
